Video Sparknotes: Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird Summary

Nobody did. Go Set A Watchman, a novel Harper Lee wrote before To Kill a Mockingbird, is due to be published worldwide on July 14, and the few people who have read it are protecting its content with gleeful ferocity. In the US, two million copies have already been printed; in the UK and Commonwealth, the first print run is , The manuscript of To Kill a Mockingbird had been kept there for years, but, Carter has said, no one had thought to look at it more closely.

When she began to leaf through it, she found another book attached to the back of that one: it contained many of the same characters — Scout and Atticus, of course — but they were older, and it was set in the late Fifties, when it was written, rather than in the Thirties. The line is a quote from the Bible — Isaiah Her genealogical terminology was precise: though To Kill a Mockingbird has an earlier setting, it grew out of Go Set a Watchman. The question may be immaterial — or merely sentimental — since Carter appears to have power of attorney.

This fact worries some people even more. Nevertheless, there are many who support Carter and her representation of Lee. Andrew Nurnberg and Jason Arthur visited Lee recently in Alabama, and both attest to her liveliness and wit. A lifelong Anglophile, she recited a famous poem by the former poet laureate John Masefield and did a devilish impersonation of CS Lewis, who taught her at Oxford in Much of the unease relates to this: would she have prevented publication, had she known?

Alice was 15 years older than Nelle; she admitted they were very un-alike. She also had to endure the effects of her small town believing it had been bared to the world in the fictionalised form of Maycomb, the setting for To Kill a Mockingbird.

Perhaps she kept the manuscript under wraps for a reason. Facts about Lee are notoriously hard to come by, so the debate is something of a distraction. But two things seem worth noting: firstly, that because of the secrecy in which Go Set a Watchman has been shrouded, the only people currently in a position to pass judgment on it are the very people who stand to gain from its publication. And secondly, that whatever the book turns out to be, it is likely to change the way we think about To Kill a Mockingbird for good.

What can we know of Go Set a Watchman, at this tantalising point before publication? However, there are some notable inconsistencies between the two, which Lee asked to preserve, including one which contradicts a major plotline in To Kill a Mockingbird. The main concern appears to be the fate of — or the truth about — a cherished hero. To Kill a Mockingbird, a lynchpin of 20th century literature, has many subjects: childhood, racism, rape, reclusiveness, community, the American South.

But at its core is the moral education of a young girl as she observes her exceptional father.

The wise, funny, pared down voice of the narrator, Scout, is what carries the book. But its hero, really, is her father Atticus Finch, a lawyer who takes on the case of a black man accused of raping a poor white woman. Though the jury convicts his client, Atticus is revered in the black community — as he has been revered in American culture ever since.

That may be about to change. Scout is This was a very difficult time for people in the South, and people would veer from one position to another during those times of segregation.

Harper Lee's life was as surprising as any work of fiction

Perhaps it was this, being frightened by her own success and the subsequent invasion of her privacy, that persuaded Lee to become a virtual recluse. She has granted almost no requests for interviews or public appearances. Until recently, she appeared likely to join the ranks of those many American authors whose first completed and published novel is also their last.

Now comes the strangest part of the story. Lee is now very frail. Presumably, she has confidence in her lawyer who, according to Lee, discovered the manuscript of this second novel, Go Set a Watchman.

The novel describes an adult Scout returning to Maycomb County, visiting her father and recalling her childhood. So I was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years. Exactly what part, if any, Lee has played in the preparation of the manuscript for press is unclear.

What is clear is that the initial print run is for two million copies. Also unclear, to me at least, is the precise relationship of Go Set a Watchman to Mockingbird: do the two stories, for instance, overlap at all, given that the novel evolved out of this earlier manuscript? Precisely what the status is of Go Set a Watchman as a story — and a story worth reading — also remains open to debate.

Less open to debate is the strange, compelling character of the story of its origins. An ageing author, with just one novel to her credit, the surprise discovery of a manuscript that she thought had been lost, the mystery surrounding the condition of the author… all this is the stuff of fiction. A belief of Emily Dickinson comes particularly to mind:. This article was originally published on The Conversation.
